Coppede' Balcony in Via Arno

At closer look Quartiere Coppedé can be quite revealing....

The Coppedé area offers visitors an amazing mix of different styles ...and even some sensual sculptures.

What it Coppedé?

A group of Art-Nouveau palaces near Viale Regina Margherita. These palaces are renowned for their architecture featuring floral, mythological and medieval effects. The Coppedé area feels like a setting straight out of a fantasy world.

Why is it called Quartiere Coppedé?

This area is named after its architect Gino Coppede’. His works are an example "Eclecticism" (i.e. borrowing freely from various sources) which characterises the beginning of the XXth century.

When and why was Coppedé built?

The idea was to create an area that would symbolise the leading role of Rome as the new Capital of Italy. Coppedé started working on this project in 1913. The First World War delayed the work for many years and the Quartiere was only completed in 1926, one year before his death in 1927.

His style was not well received by his contemporaries and there were rumours that, following widespread criticisms, he committed suicide in despair.

Quartiere Coppedé today

Today people love Quartiere Coppedé and it has therefore become one of the most exclusive areas in Rome. It is also featured in many tourist guides amongst the "Top Five" areas to visit in Northern Rome. There is definitely something unusual and mysterious about Quartiere Coppedé and this is probably why it has been featured in many horror movies such as "The Omen" with Gregory Peck and "Inferno" by Dario Argento.
